What is this calculator?

Estimate resting energy expenditure using Mifflin–St Jeor.

What can you use it for?

Use it to understand the numerical relationship between the measurements or dates entered. Estimate resting energy expenditure using Mifflin–St Jeor.

How to use it

  1. Enter weight (kg).
  2. Enter height (cm).
  3. Enter age (years).
  4. Enter equation sex parameter.
  5. Select Calculate (or Generate for random tools).
  6. Read the answer and any additional results below the form. Check the units and the limits of the method.

Formula and method

Resting energy = 10 × weight + 6.25 × height − 5 × age + sex constant

Weight is in kg, height in cm, age in years. The Mifflin–St Jeor constant is +5 for the male parameter and −161 for the female parameter.

Worked example

Weight (kg): 70, Height (cm): 175, Age (years): 30, Equation sex parameter: Male. The result is 1,648.75 kcal/day (estimated resting energy).

Assumptions and limits

Adult resting-energy estimate, not a calorie prescription. Not for children, pregnancy or acute illness.
